SNARE RUDIMENTS ARE THE BASIS OF DRUMSET PLAYING
Learning these basic rudiments on the snare drum will provide you with the fundamental tools needed to play the the entire drumset. When learning these, practice them not only between the hands, but also with the feet, and in various combinations of hands and feet. Always stay relaxed! A great deal of this has to do with sticking combinations (the order of hands playing) Slower and relaxed will always be more helpful than fast and tense. Use a metronome to help keep you steady, After you feel comfortable doing it on the snare drum for a long time, move it to other drums and between the drums. Once you can do it on a snare, you can do it an multiple drums!
SINGLE STROKEThis is the most basic rudiment. The stick starts up and ends up. Always use an alternating sticking pattern.

DOUBLE STROKEThis rudiment uses the same basic feel as the single stroke, except you play two notes on each hand in alteration.
R R L L R R L L . . . Make sure you rebound each stroke to the same position. Therefore, you need to always end the stroke up. |
PARADIDDLEThe paradiddle utilizes both the single stroke (alternating) and double stroke (two on the same hand).

DOUBLE PARADIDDLEThe paraparadiddle or double paradiddle adds an extra "para" (alternating) stroke to the beginning and then concludes with the "diddle" or double stroke (two on the same hand).

TRIPLE PARADIDDLEThe paraparaparadiddle or triple paradiddle adds a third "para" (alternating) stroke to the beginning and then concludes with the "diddle" double stroke (two on the same hand).

PARADIDDLE-DIDDLEThe paradiddle-diddle adds an extra "diddle" (double) stroke to the end of a "para" (alternating stroke). Therefore, it is an alternating stroke followed by two sets of double strokes "diddles" (two on the same hand).

FLAMFlams are a way of getting a longer and thicker sound out of the drum. One hand is down, while the other hand is up. The down hand taps the drum just before the upper hand does. This is akin to a grace note. Say "Chut."
l R r L l R r L . . . Concentrate on the level of your stick height. Remember, the flam / grace note must start out very low, around 1" from the head. |
BUZZ ROLLSThis is where you allow the stick to bounce multiple times (3 or more) before striking with the other stick.
R R R L L L R R R L L L You can think of this as a single stroke, using alternating strokes, but giving each one time to restrike the drum. FLAM ACCENTA flam accent utilizes the flam rudiment and an alternating single stroke. It incorporates
l R L R r L R L The accent comes from a stroke that starts up, which provides a little more energy when compared to the notes around it. Again, focus on the flam starting low, about 1" from the head of the drum. |
RUDIMENTS IN ACTION
This is where it starts to get really fun. Putting these rudiments to work around the drum set. Watch and listen to how each rudiment is utilized to create some simple, but exciting sounds. Again, try these slowly, staying relaxed and eventually speed them up!
